WELCOME FROM OUR PRESIDENT
I hope that you have by now already completed a membership form and mailed it in!
Aggie Moms have a big year ahead, and we want you to be a part of it!
We hope to raise another $10,000 of “new” money which we can match with existing funds, deposit it all at the San Angelo Area Foundation, and have our $20,000 matched with an additional $20,000 by the San Angelo Health Foundation!
This is the last year for these scholarship matching funds, so we want to make sure that we take advantage of the opportunity to build our Endowment Fund.
It is so exciting to think that in the spring of 2006, San Angelo Aggie Moms awarded their first Endowed Scholarship!
Theresa Michalewicz of
Big
Lake received this award.
She will be able to renew this scholarship for four years, making the total award $4,000.
Theresa is the first of what I hope will be many A&M students to benefit from our Club’s Endowed Scholarship.
I hope that you will join me in seeing that we accomplish this goal.
We are working to put out a new and improved cookbook!
The previous edition, Aggie Spirit, has been a huge success.
Hoping to build on that success, we are working to publish Aggie Tradition, which will be a theme based cookbook.
Lanee Warrick and Debbie Lisoski are heading up the committee to plan and implement Aggie Tradition.
We need your help to make this another awesome publication of San Angelo Aggie Moms.
If you have not yet submitted your family’s favorite recipes, do it today!
Our Club is planning it’s first ever China Luncheon, which we are calling “
A Place at Our Table.”
This event will be held October 21 at First United Methodist Church Celebration Hall.
We need lots of helpers!
It has already proven to be a fun project, and I am sure that as we all pitch in to have some part in it, we’ll be making memories and laying the groundwork for this to become an annual event.
Harriett Sansone is heading up the table hostesses and Shelley Gregg is organizing silent auction items.
I will be happy to answer any questions you may have about how you can help.
Aggie Moms is so much more than any one project or fundraiser.
Because each of our children have made the decision to attend
Texas
A&M
University, we all now have something in common.
So even though we are all uniquely gifted women, we share a common thread and that binds us together.
Our Club has proven to be a supportive and caring group of friends who are willing to offer their assistance and support in every way.
I hope you will join us as we work to accomplish common goals for West Texas Aggies, and as we build life-long friendships.
Don’t miss our “Howdy” meeting August 17, 6:30 p.m., Trinity Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall.
I’ll look forward to seeing you there!
Gig “Em!

Services to Know About
Aggie Budget
It's not too late to set-up (or re-assess) your Aggie's budget. A great tool can be found on the Adult, Graduate, and Off-Campus Student Services website. You'll also find many strategies for students to utilize to help make the most of their money. Check out this great resource at: http://studentlife.tamu.edu/agoss/resources/OffCampus/budget.htm
Greek Life at TAMU
About 10% of our undergraduate student population has discovered the benefits of joining a Greek organization. The camaraderie of the brothers and sisters is phenomenal, with a network worldwide. Opportunities through Greek organizations for community service not only benefits those served, but students learn more about themselves. Additionally, leadership opportunities abound through developing programs for the campus and the community. Find out more about Greek Life at TAMU at: http://greeklife.tamu.edu/
The
Student
Learning
Center is a familiar face with a new name!
The Student Learning Center, previously known as the Center for Academic Enhancement, is committed to supporting and strengthening the academic experience of students by providing a variety of programs and services that promote retention and success including:
* A two-credit hour course which focuses on critical theories of learning with application to academic performance (CAEN 101: Application of Learning Theories to College Studies)
* A two-credit hour course designed to help students identify the academic major most appropriate for their career interest (CAEN 102: Career Awareness)
* Supplemental Instruction (SI) which targets traditionally difficult core curriculum courses and provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated group study sessions
* Drop-in tutoring and by-appointment tutoring
The
Student
Learning
Center is located in Hotard Hall. Please see http://www.tamu.edu/cae/ for more information.
Campus Organizations
Texas A&M is proud to boast over 800 student organizations on campus. Thousands of students every year find new ways to get involved. Organizations cover an enormous range of topics and interests from academics to service to culture and beyond! Student organizations can be a way to apply classroom knowledge in a different environment and bolster the academic experience. While many organizations are not specifically academically related, at least 212 in a variety of colleges are! When your Aggie is looking for a place to get involved, encourage him/her to check out all of their options. Students can attend MSC Open House <http://www.msc.tamu.edu/> on Sunday, September 3rd to find out more about many organizations. Also, you can search for an organization at:
http://studentactivities.tamu.edu/stuactweb/getinsubpages/orgsearchmain.htm
Updating Directory Information
When your student sets up their computing access at their New Student Conference, they enter specific information about themselves. Students have the option to have any or all of the data elements restricted from release as directory information. To select this option or to modify/update information, students should go to MyRecord and follow the instructions. It is important for both students and parents contact information to be accurate information in the event of an emergency. http://myrecord.tamu.edu
What To Expect For Parents of First Year Students
Be prepared to see a mix of emotions and signals from your student this month. They will face many ups and downs as they make the transition from high school to college. Reassure your student that the adjustments she or he is experiencing are common and expected for first year students.
Students may be separating from a boyfriend or girlfriend or very close friends from high school and worried about the separation from those individuals who have been an important part of their daily lives. Encourage your student to get to know students in their residence hall, apartment complex and class. This will expand his or her social circle and help ease the transition to Aggieland.
Your student will take on all responsibility for managing personal time. This can be exciting and overwhelming, so be there to listen to them as they solve their problems and learn to manage their schedules.
