WELCOME FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Fellow Moms!
Greetings in this blessed time of the year as the leaves begin to turn, the air gets a little nippy in the mornings, and the time change steals our evening light! Football weather! Even facing the nationally ranked teams ahead of us, remember the Ol’ Aggie saying “Win, lose or draw, we always win at halftime!
I have just returned from a weekend in College Station as a counselor for Aggie Moms’ Camp. Even after 5 years as an Aggie Mom, it was a lot of fun. Historically it was geared for freshmen moms to help them see and understand the Aggie World their children had entered. It is now geared to any Aggie mom who wants to understand the jargon, stories and surroundings that our children are immersed in. It was a great opportunity to tour behind the scenes places and learn about opportunities and helps available for my daughter. I highly recommend that every mother consider attending this “Camp” as soon as they can in their student’s stay at A&M. I will share more of the details with you at the meeting this month.
We had wonderful help with assembling the gift jars at our meeting on October 22. With so many different talents among the club, the gifts are not only well planned, but beautifully decorated, too. Thanks a million! We will begin selling them in December at College Station.
November is Fall Goodie Bag Meeting! Please bring something to put in 95-100 bags to send to our current students! The bags will be labeled and spread around the room in preparation of your arrival. Take a moment to put your donation in the bags before grabbing something to eat! At the end of the evening we will have mothers of current students take the bag for their student and make sure it gets to them. With Thanksgiving just a week after the meeting, we hope this will be easy. The bag is designed to help them get through Finals, so encourage them to hold off before opening the bag! If you know you will be unable to be at the meeting, please ask another mom to bring you the bag for your student. You may email or call me if you need more help or information on Goodie Bags.
Lastly, I want to thank you again for joining the Aggie Moms’ Club this year. Now all we need is for you to come to our meetings. As the election just proved again, every person counts. We need you. Gig’em.
Hoping to see you November 18th,
Judy D. Turner ‘78 President 2004-2005

NEVIE’S NEWS — Aggie Mom Endowed Scholarship
Our drive to raise funds for our new San Angelo A & M Mother's Club Scholarship through the San Angelo Aread Foundation is off to a good start! During the October meeting $900. was pledged. With the Club's match of $900, and the Health Foundation's match of $1800., our scholarship fund already has $3600! Expect a phone call this month if you haven't already made a pledge or written a check. We hope to meet our required minimum - $2500. before Christmas, and REALLY hope to meet our MAXIMUM - $10,000! Please talk this over with your families, and consider a pledge of any amount. I realize families of current students are paying tuition and may not be in a position to make large pledges. That is alright! We will accept any amount you are able to pledge! We are all working together to make this happen for our Aggies! I look forward to visiting with you about this in the weeks ahead!
If you are interested in participating in a San Angelo A&M Mothers’ Club Endowed Scholarship, please contact Nevie Lacy (651-4532) or Judy Turner (465-4998). You can make a donation before January 1 for a tax deduction for the 2004 year and you can also make a donation after January 1 for a tax deduction for the 2005 year.
It is important for us to get this done as soon as possible as the foundation runs out of money quickly.
AGGIE TRADITIONS
Texas A&M University, the state’s oldest public institution of higher learning, was established in 1876. Through the years and changes, A&M has held fast to what has made it so great—it’s traditions. Nowhere else can a school so rich in tradition be found. these traditions make A&M different and better than all the rest. The traditions provide a foundation upon which greatness can be built and upon which leadership can flourish. We continue this month sharing some of these traditions with the San Angelo Aggie Moms.
BONFIRE
Starting in 1909 Texas A&M University students worked together each year to build a massive bonfire. This annual tradition continued (except in 1963 when the Bonfire did not burn following the assassination of President Kennedy) and eventually came under the leadership of the Aggie Bonfire Committee until 1999. Bonfire has symbolized the burning desire of Aggies to beat the University of Texas in the annual football game.
REPLANT
Another “new army” tradition that began in 1991 is replant. Just as Aggie come together in the Fall o build the Bonfire, the unite in the Spring to replace each fallen tree with two new ones. In just three years, replant grew from replacing 400 trees to 40,000 and it continues to grow.
ELEPHANT WALK
Just before the annual clash between Texas A&M and t.u., seniors gather between the flagpole and the Academic Building and form a single file line. They wander about campus like dying elephants seeking a secluded spot to end their days. By this day, Bonfire has been built and the seniors are no longer of any use to the 12th Man. What could be more appropriate than for a totally useless Aggie to end his days than in this pachydermatous promenade?
REVEILLE BALL
Reveille Ball is a free semi-formal held every fall for Texas A&M students. Reveille Ball began in 2001 as the 125th anniversary ball and due to positive student feedback has continued each year. With a rough attendance of 1500 students per year, Reveille Ball is an elegant evening of dancing and socializing that serves to unite the student body. Students may dance to the DJ, relax in the piano lounge, enjoy free appetizers and take pictures with Reveille.
