WELCOME FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Fellow Moms! Wow, you are faithful women! As of this newsletter, we are 119 strong! I cannot thank you enough for joining our organization. Together, we will serve our children well. I never fail to marvel at the good hearts that live in West Texas! Together we can do great things.
The next step in helping the students, it to come to the meeting on October 21 at 6:30 PM at Trinity Lutheran Fellowship Hall! We are going to begin assembling the gift jars that we are going to sell to raise money this year. Look for a list of items to bring to the meeting elsewhere in this newsletter. Wear comfortable clothes and come have a great evening with us. We have very little business to cover this month, so we should have plenty of time to visit and eat! Remember the old saying of ‘many hands make light work’!
The November meeting is when we will assemble Goody Bags to distribute to our current students to help them get through Finals. These are great pick-me-ups for our students when they get them in late November. I mention this now, because some of you industrious ladies like to plan ahead. We have around 95 students to prepared bags for. If you are somewhere you can get bulk items anytime, start planning ahead. While you are visiting at the October meeting, you may want to find other Moms to join forces with to share costs. Remember that it is not the amount we spend, but the thoughts we send.
Last but not least, I want to remind you to think of Terri Motl as she has been baby sitting the Fish Fish this month. We hope it has helped ease the emptiness of her son’s first semester away at college. Come and see which Freshman Mother will have the opportunity to care for the fish next month.
See you soon & Gig’em, Judy D. Turner ‘78 President 2004-2005

CARPOOL - Starting Their 6th Year
On a typical Friday night on Northgate one can spot a number of Aggies decked out in bright green T-shirts looking for people who need a safe ride home. Those students are volunteers with Caring Aggies are Protecting Over Our Lives, an organization that began in 1999, aimed at giving students a safe ride home after a night of drinking. CARPOOL reached a milestone last April as it gave its 50,000th ride since it began operating.
CARPOOL began on Sept. 16, 1999, by former A&M student Jeff Schiefelbein who, after receiving a DWI in College Station, went to a Mother's Against Drunk Driving impact panel where he was inspired by a tragic drunk driving story and decided to begin a program unlike any other in the nation. CARPOOL was created to serve the community, keep Aggies and others safe, make roads safer and make the community safer. Currently, CARPOOL has 275 student volunteers and has increased the number of cars it runs to 14. CARPOOL averages about 180 rides each night. CARPOOL runs Thursday through Saturday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. CARPOOL hopes to reach their goal of 60,000 during the fall term.
Thanks CARPOOL for helping to keep our Aggies safe!

PARENTS WEEKEND UPDATE
Due to a convergence of factors, a decision has been made to change the dates of Parents' Weekend for Spring 2005. This decision was made after much thought and consultation from both university and community constituencies. The dates for Parents' Weekend 2005 are now set for April 8-10, 2005. Planners in the Department of Student Activities say they recognize that individuals and organizations who have made arrangements around the previous dates (April 22-24) will now have to change them. They apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause and appreciate any assistance in notifying others of the new dates. Direct any questions to Kevin Jackson, director of the Department of Student Activities at kevin@stuact.tamu.edu or Sharra Durham, advisor to the Parents' Weekend Committee at sharra@stuact.tamu.edu. Both may also be reached at 979-845-1133.

AGGIE TRADITIONS
Texas A&M University, the state’s oldest public institution of higher learning, was established in 1876. Through the years and changes, A&M has held fast to what has made it so great—it’s traditions. Nowhere else can a school so rich in tradition be found. these traditions make A&M different and better than all the rest. The traditions provide a foundation upon which greatness can be built and upon which leadership can flourish. Over the next few months we plan to cover some of these traditions in the San Angelo Aggie Moms’ Monthly Newsletter.
YELL PRACTICE
Where other schools have cheers, Aggie proudly (and loudly) show enthusiasm through their many yells. They shout these yells at Yell Practice to build motivation and spirit for an upcoming event, whether it is a football game or some other competition.
Yell Practice is led by the Yell Leaders, three seniors and two juniors, elected by the student body for their burning desire to motivate the Aggies. For home football games, Yell Practice occurs Friday night before the game at Kyle Field. For an away game, a Yell Practice is held on Thursday evening in the Grove.
The first Midnight Yell Practice was held in 1932. There are many stories as the origin of Midnight Yell. Most Aggies believe that it began with a group of cadets that spread a rumor telling everyone to fall out of their dorms and meet at the YMCA building. Although this was against the rule, everyone showed up, and the Midnight Yell Practice was born.
On September 17, 1999, a new tradition was formed... First Yell (the first Midnight Yell of the school year) brought with it many related activities for everyone on Friday and Saturday including concerts, BBQ, and a Former Yell Leaders Reunion.
REVEILLE - Happy Birthday!
Reveille, the first lady of Aggieland, is the official mascot of Texas A&M University. She is the highest ranking member of the Corps of Cadets, and she is a Five-Star General.
Reveille I came to Texas A&M in January 1931. A group of cadets hit a small black and white dog on their way back from Navasota. They picked up the dog and brought her back to school so they could care for her. The next morning, when "Reveille" was blown by a bugler, she started barking. She was named after this morning wakeup call. The following football season she was named the official mascot when she led the band onto the field during their half-time performance. When Reveille I died on January 18, 1944, she was given a formal military funeral on the gridiron of Kyle Field. She was then buried at the north entrance to the field, as all Reveilles are, facing the scoreboard so that she can always watch the Aggies outscore their opponent.
Before naming Reveille II, there were several other unofficial mascots, such as Tripod, Spot, and Ranger. It was not until a later Reveille that she was a full-blood Collie. The most current Reveille is Reveille VII who was inducted during Parents Weekend in April 2001. Reveille VII recently celebrated her 4th birthday on October 9.
Reveille is the most revered dog on campus. Company E-2 has the privilege of taking care of Reveille. If she is sleeping on a cadet's bed, that cadet must sleep on the floor. Cadets address Reveille as "Miss Rev, ma'am." If she is in class and barks while the professor is teaching, the class is to be immediately dismissed.
Reveille is a highly cherished mascot and receives only the best. To learn more about the history of Reveille, visit the following website where The Bryan-College Station Eagle had a great three-part series: http://www.theeagle.com/brazossunday/082904rev1.php

AGGIE MOM ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Imagine having a gift you give, DOUBLED. Now, imagine it QUADRUPLED!
The San Angelo Area Foundation offers us a unique opportunity to do that. The following excerpt from the Area Foundation’s Fall 2003 newsletter explains: “If you contribute from $5000 up to $20,000 to establish an endowed scholarship fund at the San Angelo Area Foundation, the San Angelo Health Foundation will match your gift! The San Angelo Health Foundation has granted up to $400,000 through 2005 for matching grants to encourage donors to create endowed scholarship funds.”
The Health Foundation stipulates that the contribution must be “new” money from natural persons.” However, our club is allowed to “match” your donation from our existing funds, and the Health Foundation would in turn match the total amount. For example:
You give to the San Angelo Area Foundation: $100.00 on behalf of Aggie Moms Aggie Moms matches your donation $100.00 Health Foundation matches our total $200.00
Total placed in Aggie Mom Endowed Scholarship with Area Foundation: $400.00
There is a $5000. minimum, so we must raise a minimum of $2500. in “new money” that we could match with $2500 of money from our existing savings accounts.
We can establish our own guidelines for the recipient of the scholarship, and even use our own selection committee. The Area Foundation would invest our money and charge a small fee from our income for managing the fund. The amount charged would depend upon whether they fully administer the scholarship or not.
Would you consider contributing your “New Money” to the San Angelo Area Foundation for the purpose of establishing such a scholarship? We would like to explore this idea, and determine if our membership is interested in establishing such a scholarship during this “limited time offer” from the San Angelo Health Foundation.
If you are interested in participating in a San Angelo A&M Mothers’ Club Endowed Scholarship, please contact Nevie Lacy (651-4532) or Judy Turner (465-4998).
You can make a donation before January 1 for a tax deduction for the 2004 year and you can also make a donation after January 1 for a tax deduction for the 2005 year.
It is important for us to get this done as soon as possible as the foundation runs out of money quickly.
A Big Thanks!
A big thanks goes to Christopher Hunter (son of Aggie Mom, Chris Hunter) for the upkeep of the San Angelo Aggie Moms website and for notifying the members when the newsletter is ready as well as sending out reminders when needed. We sincerely appreciate all of your help.
WORD FROM THE WEBMASTER
Howdy to all of my Aggie Moms! I'm so happy to be helping you out another year! This year is a little more crazy than last year though because (and I'm about to do my own bragging here [hint, hint MOM!]) Tara, my wife, and I have gone through some great changes! First we've opened our own business and I'm staying very, very busy with it because we're doing much better than I could have possibly imagined or hoped! Second, we built a house here in College Station and moved in in July of this year. I'm busy because I've been working very hard out in the yard to get it beautiful. If you're ever in College Station, feel free to drop on by to see my new passion... gardening. And finally third, Tara is eleven weeks pregnant! Yes, he or she is going to be our firstborn! So on top of taking care of the business and the outside yardwork I now have new responsiblilities which include taking care of Tara and the inside housework and occasionally the laundry and cooking!!
Anyways, I didn't mean to go on too much, but as I'm in charge of sending the E-Newsletters out to all of my Aggie Moms, I've noticed that my own Mom hasn't bragged on our success this year!! At least not in the newsletter!! So if you see her at the meeting or out and about, please let her know that you had to read it here and I had to brag on myself!!
Thank you!
